SVE seeks Volunteer Charity Accounting Independant Examiners

Have you got an interest in learning about Charity Accounting and Independent Examination of Charity Accounts?

Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise (SVE) is looking to train Volunteer Charity Accounting Independent Examiners across the Forth Valley area.  The training is free, your commitment, 2/3 days per month over the next year.

We are looking for volunteer students who are willing to learn and work within the expansive third sector carrying out charity Independent Examinations. The student must be numerically competent and be able to prioritise and manage workload and training commitments. This opportunity will provide the student with excellent Charity Accounting training, first hand experience of the Independent Examination process and display the possibilities of working within the Third Sector Environment.

SVE is in the process of piloting a volunteer-led Independent Examination (IE) project with the aim of improving the financial management procedures and reporting of charities in the Stirling area.

Over the last few years there has been a significant increase in enquiries with regards to affordable accountancy services for small charities with an income under £25,000; some charities have attempted to mitigate this by approaching those they deem to be competent persons to independently examine their accounts. Unfortunately this does not always result in a proper examination and can result in charity trustees not fully complying with their duties under the Charites and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act 2005.

Community Accountancy Scotland is addressing this issue by delivering a high quality Independent Examination service to the charity sector. However, in our experience, charities with income of under £25,000 are unable to even afford modest fees, and can often require more time to support and correct financial management procedures. SVE are therefore in the process of developing a volunteer led Independent Examination project to mitigate this.

The project will train volunteers to prepare and independently examine accounts so that they gain experience in this specialised field. Signing up for this year long project will give students valuable experience and increased skills in charity accountancy and financial management.  There will also be opportunities to take on the role of Treasurer for a local charity.

The aim of the project is to develop a volunteer-led Independent Examination service which will improve the financial management procedures and reporting of charities in the Stirling area.

The project has the following outcomes.

  • To train a bank of volunteer Independent Examiners (IE’s) who have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a charity accountancy service through Stirling Council area.
  • An affordable, informative charity accountancy service that can be accessed by low income charities.
  • Charities in the pilot have increased knowledge and understanding of Regulations underpinning charity accounting.
